Installing
The software installs automatically on download.
Wait till you get the message that it has been installed

Options

a) Phonetic
b) Inscript keyboard - Preferable since unlike the physical keyboard in laptop, the keys are labelled on Malayalam 
c) Transliteration
d) Swarnalekha

Configuring the handset

 Settings -> Language & Input
Tap on "Set up input methods".
Tap on the gear icon next to Indic Keyboard.
Tap on "Languages", uncheck "User system language" and choose your language and layout from the list.

The basic typing is given HERE

Difference is in typing Chillaksharam.
Note that there are two keys marked as ZWJ and ZWNJ

ZWJ - Zero Width Joiner
This key is used to get Chillaksharas. First type the Vyanjana of the chillakshara followed by ് and then click on ZWJ key.
Use ന for ൻ, ല for ല്‍, ള for ൾ, ര for ർ, ണ for ൺ

ZWNJ - Zero Width Non Joiner
This key is used to prevent two letters from joining with each other.
eg: To get proper letters instead of സോഫ്റ്റ്വേര്‍ add ZWNJ before വ to get സോഫ്റ്റ്‌വേര്‍.

Varamozhi Malayalam Editor and more softwares for Windows Phone HERE

The program's interface is rather simple. At startup, you can see a screen divided in two parts. In the left panel, you can write the word you want to transliterate. The Malayalam text will appear simultaneously in the right panel as you write. It is a very straightforward process. The program also opens a system window to support the interface. You can close it if you want since it will not affect the program's performance.

Please note that the program does not translate words from one language into another but only transliterates them, that is, it only transforms each English letter into its Malayalam equivalent. This difference is important, since transliterated words taken directly from the English language may not have a sense when written in Malayalam, and vice versa.

activate malayalam keyboard samsung mobile phones

Samsung mobile phones have inbuilt Malayalam Keyboard but is not active by default. If one wants to type Malayalam, it has to be activated. The procedure is very simple.

Settings > Language and Input > Multiple Languages > Select Input Language > Malayalam

The Malayalam keyboard is now activated.

Typing letters - combining malayalam letters - koottaksharam

Typing simple Swaras and Vyanjanas and Chillaksharas is easy. Just click on the key labelled with the letter.

Chillaksharas are available in the third layer that can be brought up by clicking the key marked o-| at the top left corner of the keyboard.

Numbers can be typed by clicking on the key at the bottom left marked 123 Sym.

Adding Swara to a vyanjan first type the Vyanjana followed by the Swara sign the layer of which will open up automatically after typing the Vyanjana

Besides the basic Qwerty keyboard some android phones, eg: Samsung phones, have inbuilt Malayalam Board. But they are not active by default. One has to activate Malayalam to start to type Malayalam in SMS, Mail, Facebook, Evernote etc.

Activating Malayalam - Settings > Language and Input > Multiple Languages > Select Input Language > Malayalam

Once activated input language can be changed at will by dragging on the space bar.

Malayalam comes in 3 layers.

The first layer contains the basic swara akshara and vyanjana

Clicking on the top-left key marked o-| will open up the next 2 layers which contains the swara chihnams. (This layer opens up automatically following typing any vyanjana). The difference from the first layer is that this layer contains the swara chihnas.

The third layer never opens up automatically but can be opened by clicking on the o-| key.

Note that the letters ള ഴ റ റ്റ and atomic chillaksharas ൺ ൻ ർ ല്‍ ൾ are available in this layer,

Unlike Inscript Keyboard, zero width joiner and zero width non-joiner are not available in Samsung keyboard.
